Volunteers Walking for Veterans!

The Veteran Mental Health Center of Excellence recently welcomed volunteers from the Netherlands — John Stienen and Jeroen Veenstra — who had organized a charitable fundraiser to support Ukrainian veterans. As part of their initiative, they completed the four-day walking marathon Vierdaagse in the city of Nijmegen, collecting donations for the development of the Center.

During their visit, John and Jeroen met with the Center’s team, learned about its work areas, spoke with specialists, and witnessed firsthand the ongoing process of building and developing the Center’s space. The volunteers expressed their admiration for the teamwork and dedication of the staff, who work tirelessly every day to support the mental health of veterans and their families.

“This is an incredibly important cause, and we’re glad to be part of it. Ukrainian veterans deserve care, support, and professional help,” said John Stienen.

The charitable initiative took place within the framework of the FGIP (Federation Global Initiative on Psychiatry) project, which supports social initiatives in Ukraine and other countries affected by war. Donations raised by John and Jeroen will go toward the continued development of the Center as a space for psychological support, rehabilitation, and reintegration of veterans into peaceful life.

It’s worth noting that in July of this year, over 45,000 people took part in the Vierdaagse — one of the largest walking events in Europe. John and Jeroen’s participation in the event was dedicated to supporting Ukrainian servicemembers and their families.

The Center sincerely thanks John, Jeroen, FGIP, and everyone who contributed to the fundraiser for their support, solidarity, and trust. Together we are stronger!
